A games portal with 230M pageviews

Over about eight years I built an online games portal on WordPress – from the first line of content to #1 on Google for the main keyword. In just twelve months the site recorded over 230M pageviews.

Building the portal

From 2012 I built the portal step by step. I wrote the first roughly 200 articles myself. As it grew, I hired copywriters and managed content production: on average 1,800–2,100 characters per description. In total more than 12,500 games were published.

Tech: WordPress

The portal ran on WordPress. I ran the hosting and the CMS myself and wrote the specifications for programmers and designers.

More projects: WordPress and OpenCart

I also built the learning portal znayko.net on WordPress, with homework solutions and school textbooks for grades 1–11. That is where my automation started in 2017: a pipeline of parser, processing and import made adding new content about 100× faster – with no AI at all.

I know how an online shop works under the hood from working with OpenCart on the shop technocat.com.ua.

SEO to the top

For about four to five months the site ranked #1 on Google for the niche’s most important keyword (“games for girls”). Behind it: consistent on-page optimisation, a clean site structure and targeted link building via established link marketplaces (Rotapost, GoGetLinks, Webartex).

In twelve months (07/2013–07/2014), over 230M pageviews, averaging around 12 pages per session.

Mastering SEO crises

Search engine algorithms are a moving target. I successfully pulled the project out of Yandex’s “Minusinsk” filter and resolved further search penalties twice. This recovery experience is one of the most valuable lessons from the project – it’s about not just building SEO, but stabilising it under pressure.

Reach & monetisation

Traffic was monetised via Google AdSense. Using the reach reports I continuously analysed and optimised performance, user behaviour and revenue.

Content production

Content production ran through established content and freelance platforms: over the years I commissioned, reviewed and approved most of the game descriptions there, plus design and implementation work.

The project is documented in the Internet Archive: web.archive.org → igrydljadevochek2.ru ↗

What I bring

  • SEO end-to-end: on-page, site structure, keyword strategy and link building – for lasting visibility on Google.
  • Content production at scale: own writing, briefings and managing copywriters.
  • Experience recovering from search engine filters – when rankings suddenly drop.
  • Monetisation and data-driven optimisation instead of gut feeling.
